Otakon

Tasked with redesigning the visual identity of a real festival or convention, I chose Otakon for its distinct lack of a coherent profile.

The first thing I did was overhaul their logo typography and their mascot. They've always had a mascot, but I wanted it to play a central role in their identity and chose to have it a part of the logo. The next step was coming up with a typeface that screams Japan without falling into the uncanny valley of traiditional "asian" fonts. To accomplish this, I decided to draw the letters myself to get them just right.

The concept behind the folder was to borrow from the layout of old text scrolls, with the content laid out vertically. Each fold would contain one day's worth of planned programs and acitvites. The folder had print on both sides of the paper; information on one side and the program on the other. The information side contained an illustrated layout of the convention center, with colored markings that corresponded with headings to indicate where the rooms could be found.
